How to make yourself visible as an actor

How to make yourself visible as an actor

Knowing how to make yourself visible as an actor is one of the toughest things aspiring actors have trouble trying to crack the code with. I get emails and comments on our social media profiles every week from actors wanting to know the magic formula for making them visible quicker.

THE MAGIC FORMULA

The secret to it, which really isn’t a secret or magical, is consistency. The internet has made it easier than ever to connect with casting directors, agents and directors and to get a feel for their world, but if you’re not consistent in your marketing or consistent in showing up for your dreams then it’s as if you don’t exist as an actor. It’s this invisibility that leads to actors feeling jaded and frustrated.

Think of it like this, to keep a social life going you have to keep showing up for your friends, to keep your family life going strong you have to keep showing up for your loved ones and to keep your acting career going strong you have to do the same, so you see it’s all about showing up and taking action.

HOW TO MAKE YOURSELF VISIBLE AS AN ACTOR

Lots of actors get confused with the action they need to take and end up doing a little bit of this and a little bit of that with pretty shoddy results, so I’ve put together 10 things that will help you make yourself (more) visible as an actor.

Now they’re quite intense, so to make it easier I’d like to challenge you to take part in my mission: visible in 10. All you have to do is complete one short but powerful mission per day for 10 days. If you want the workbook that goes along with this challenge to make it easier, you can download it HERE (you’ll just need to pop in your email as I’ll be sending you a short email each day for the next 10 days to remind you of your mission for the day). You can also join my private Facebook group HERE* to share your results and for some extra motivation.

Are you ready to learn how to make yourself visible as an actor and to start the challenge?

  • GET CLEAR – what exactly does getting visible mean to you? It’s different for everyone, so write this down in a notebook or in the workbook if you’re taking the challenge. Make sure it feels right to you and that you aren’t just writing down what you think being visible should be. As soon as you’re clear on this it will make it easier for you to figure out what you need to do to make yourself visible.

  • MAGIC MANTRA –  You have to believe with every fibre of your being that you WILL become visible, but as with anything there will be times when things don’t seem to be working out. Having a solid mantra to get you through these can help you stay motivated. What will yours be?

  • HOW ARE YOU UNIQUE? – what is different about you as an actor? What qualities do you have that are unique to you? How will the director benefit if he or she hires you? Write this down. You will use this in your marketing from your website to your cover letters.

  • PROVE IT – You need proof you’re sellable. Your showreel, reviews, website, YouTube channel are all evidence of your sellability but you must keep improving these. Make sure every piece of content you put out is better than the last piece and showcases your uniqueness.

  • WHO ARE YOU TARGETING? – Which productions do you fit into? As soon as you’re clear on this you only need to focus your marketing to those people who work on these productions – targeting others is a waste of time, no matter how tempting it may be. Becoming visible is all about working smart, not hard!

  • WHERE ARE YOU SHOWING UP? – Where do you need to put your content? Where exactly do you need to market yourself for the right people to see it?

  • CONNECT – Nobody finds success by themselves. Who do you know in the industry? Who have you already worked with?

  • MAP IT OUT – What specific steps do you need to take to get visible? If you’re struggling with this ask another actor, who you feel is a little bit further ahead of you, what they have been doing to become more visible. You can then try out their steps to see if it will work for you. Remember everything is an experiment so if it doesn’t work it isn’t a reflection on you it just means you’ll need to try something else. Write this down in a notebook or in the workbook if you’re taking the challenge.

  • TIME IT – Give yourself realistic timeframes of when you want to have achieved these things. Be specific with the date then gear everything towards completing the action by those dates

  • HAS IT WORKED? – You must take time to reflect on everything. Ask yourself what worked and what hasn’t, there’s no point in doing the same thing over and over if it isn’t making you more visible.

You owe it to yourself to let the acting world know you exist. Your qualities are needed so don’t hide away.
