I come across lots (lots being an understatement) of aspiring actors with big dreams of quitting their day jobs and jumping from role to role, living the high life of an actor. I will take a guess that 99% of those very same people who talk a good game quit. Why? Because of the fear of never making it: the fear of always living hand to mouth, the fear of not living the normal life that society expects of us, the fear of what family/friends may say when times are tough.
The fear of never making it
We all know the acting industry is a toughy, we don’t need to be reminded thank you very much, but we have been conditioned. We have been conditioned to believe it’s only for the elite, that only the very best will make it and that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Not every working actor has trained, not every working actor is from wealth (think Julie Walters, Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkins, Jim Carrey) and not every working actor is at the top of their game. So it seems silly that this thought process is in us from the day we decide we want to become an actor.
Born Survivor
In my honest opinion I believe you should have decent training behind you but even RADA can’t guarantee you will make it. So what does it take to make it? A survivor!! You have to honestly ask yourself if that is what you are. Do you have the ability to block out the comments some will make when you’re “resting”? Do you have the ability to block out the frustration and hardships of not earning a decent income regularly? Do you have the ability to carry on when you know the best person for the job wasn’t employed? Do you have the ability to keep using each no as a learning curve and not take it personally? If you do, you are a survivor and it’s high time you survived the industry because it IS possible.
If you don’t feel you are naturally a survivor don’t worry, a little change in your thoughts will do you wonders. From a scientific perspective, your sub-conscious looks for whatever thoughts have been impregnated into it.
So you see the fear of never making it isn’t your fear, it’s everyone else’s that has been projected onto you, isn’t it time you changed that?
If this resonated with you, I’d love to hear from you. Scroll down and leave a comment or pay it forward and share with your acting friends, it could be just the thing they need to read today.

You’re very welcome. Keep going! Louise
Thankyou very much for posting this Louise! Luckily I’ve learned how to distance myself from most negative comments, although sometimes I’m guilty of letting them in. What you say is so true! But also I feel personally that it could be those who are trying to project their negative comments onto us to try & influence us, are the ones who live in fear. The fear of seeing us make it. That in a sense make me feel like what they’re saying is that we have the ability to succeed…and that makes me smile 🙂
You’re very welcome. You also raise a good point! Louise
