  • Are you ready to dive in?

Read each question and answer honestly with what is the most true for you. You can only choose one answer per question.
  • THE HEART ACTOR

IN A NUTSHELL: You aren't afraid to connect to your emotions and express them, this is such a good quality, but the emotions aren't always controlled and often end up very big (this can get very close to hammy - overdramatic - acting).

Strengths: You feel deeply and are able to connect to your emotions quickly. You throw yourself into scenes, often with very few inhibitions and have a lot of energy which you use by expressing the emotions in a larger than life way.

BLINDSPOTS: The emotions aren't always justified and can end up very big, chaotic and out of control meaning your emotional work doesn't always make sense to the audience. This can lead to you feeling very tired after scenes, and even with a sore throat because of how much energy you're using. Your scenes can become very ungrounded.

    How to overcome this:

Before starting any scene work, you must understand where the emotions are coming from in the character - either a place of desire or resistance, to be able to justify them in the scene.

Once you understand this, you must then practice getting grounded and present so you can connect truthfully to your emotions, allowing them to be controlled.

  • THE HEAD ACTOR

IN A NUTSHELL: You understand the character, which is an incredible quality to have, but struggle to connect to their inner emotional world and express that authentically.

Strengths: You are able to analyse the character and have a deep understanding of their behaviour, motives and the language they choose (to use). You can talk about the character at great length because you understand the nuance of human behaviour, making your character analysis stellar. Your character backstories (if you do them) are full of depth and you're able to connect the dots between their current reality in the scenes and what has led them to where they are from their past.

BLINDSPOTS: The intellect doesn't translate to feelings in scenes. Performances are mechanical as you are in your head disconnecting you from your heart, which is where authentic emotion is geneterated from

How to overcome this: Before being able to connect to your emotions, you need to step away from the analysis that dominates your thoughts (known as mental tension) and practice becoming present in your body. In simple terms, forget the character analysis and trust this knowledge will guide you without needing to conciously think about it.
