3 Secrets to gaining confidence at auditions

3 secrets to gaining confidence at auditions

Auditions appear to be a microcosm of the acting industry, yet you will spend much of your acting career in auditions as oppose to productions and an even larger majority of time applying for auditions. Let’s assume you’re fairly confident with applying for auditions (if not this blog covers cover letters) and you’re getting a good turnover of auditions and/or self-tapes… So what’s the problem? You’re not landing the roles and it’s starting to knock your confidence, leaving you wondering where you’re going wrong.

The main issues with auditions is the pressure

You have a small amount of time to compress your talent into to show you are the right actor for the role. Of course there are some things out of your control – mainly looks – if the director has a specific look in mind there’s not a great deal you can do about that but there are lots of things you do have control over.

3 secrets to gaining confidence at auditions

If you choose to become disciplined and make time to work at these 3 secrets, you will transform the results you’re currently getting with auditions, to the results you’re actually after – landing the role.

  1. Fears – are the root of all things undesired. Your current audition results are more than likely being dictated by your unconscious (and even conscious) fears… You see, as humans our unconscious mind runs our life and our unconscious mind is VERY powerful. All of our beliefs about our self are stored there. Whatever your beliefs are around auditions will be determining how you handle your nerves. So what does this mean in terms of auditions then? You must firstly become aware of your fears around auditions and address them. The more energy you give to your fears, the more they will dominate your auditions and the more you will keep seeing the same result over and over. Once you have addressed them it is then your job to commit to challenging them. The bad news is they won’t disappear over night, the good news is they will eventually (this is different for each person), with determination.
  2. Script analysis  – this skill is your lifeblood at auditions. Whether you are given a script to prepare beforehand or you are asked to sight read you must get your script analysis skills on point, no excuses. It’s no good trying to wing it. Script analysis will help you feel more connected to the piece, more confident and able to make justified choices. Without script analysis you will simply guess and give a wishy washy performance, which is most definitely not what casting directors want to see.
  3. Practice –  once you have begun work on step 1 and step 2 you now need to get yourself to as many auditions as possible and keep practising your audition technique. The more you practice the more they will become second nature – just like driving a car or speaking a second language. The more auditions you go to, having dedicated yourself to step 1 and 2, the more your confidence will grow and the easier it will be to see each audition as a valuable lesson in progressing your acting career as oppose to an unwanted hindrance.
